What does it take to succeed
using hypnosis to stop smoking?

The number of hypnosis sessions you go through is important, according to Randy Gilchrist, Psy.D
Randy Gilchrist, Psy.D, offers a hypnosis product the "Non-Smokers Edge" for $149.00.  He refers to the Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors, by Hammond, D.C. (1990) where it talks about your chances of success with a single hypnosis session.  

In that Handbook, it says that research studies indicate that one single hypnosis treatment to stop smoking resulted in about 25% success......opposed to about 66% of those who went through 4-5 sessions of hypnosis to help stop smoking.

But how realistic are those percentages?  As you learn more about quit smoking studies that aren't widely publicized, you start to look at some success percentages with a critical eye.

Take a look into the future of your quit
with these quit smoking study results.

While researching I came across several studies that were more in line with what I've personally seen around me. While you read the following ask yourself, "how many people do you know personally who have stayed quit successfully for more than several months?"   What does the reality of your life tell you?

  • National Health Institutes sites tells us about a study where 126 people tried to quit a second time with nicotine replacement therapy, gum, patches, etc.     And 98% failed!
  • PR Web release article headline "Are nicotine weaning products a bad joke?" was about a study review published in Tobacco Control that combined and averaged nicotine replacement therapy studies - 93% of nicotine patch & gum participants were smoking again within 6 months!
  • A study of the California Tobacco Surveys of 1992, 1996 and 1999 concluded that nicotine replacement therapy's were "no longer effective in increasing long-term successful cessation...".
    (Was it ever? How could it go from effective to no longer effective?)
  • The National Institute on Drug Abuse site tells you "less than 7 percent of smokers who try to quit achieve more than 1 year of abstinence...(and)...most smokers relapse within a few days of attempting to quit."

This is not meant to stop you from trying to quit!  But it's important you know your odds of success - ahead of time - with "standard" ways to quit smoking, in case you decide to go that way.  

And you may consider these "standard" ways to quit smoking when you see that using hypnosis to stop smoking means dealing with some issues.  Issues that may cause you to fall into NRT include:

  • hypnosis treatments can be expensive - especially if your're doing several sessions...
  • it may be a problem finding a hypnotist who really knows what their doing...
  • you have to make the time to go to his office and go through it (maybe for several sessions)...
  • and you have to go under a trance - a problem with many people.

To improve your chances of success in your quit,

Dr. Charles E. Henderson, Ph.D. has written several books on hypnotism.  He did his graduate work at University of New Mexico and got his MA and Ph.D. at the University of Denver.  

He has a page online about "good things to know about hypnosis", where interestingly he tells you that "all hypnosis is self-hypnosis".  Even if you're being hypnotized by someone else or by a prerecorded tape to "talk you into a hypnotic state".

And if you decide to try "self-hypnosis" keep in mind Dr. Henderson emphasizes that self-hypnosis is a skill, not unlike learning a musical instrument.  If you decide to take this route, he suggests that 20 minutes to an hour of self-hypnosis practice per day is probably an optimum length of time.

Suggestion's, Dr. Henderson says, are the powerful force to using hypnosis (or self-hypnosis) to stop smoking.  Because they are what directs the subconscious to achieving your chosen goals.

  • under the right conditions.

Without these 3 critical points addressed, hypnosis or self-hypnosis can't be expected to achieve very spectacular results.   As noted by in a testimonial on the Divinity Publishing website... -
